What is your athletic background?
Mostly (slow) running and cycling
What was your workout routine prior to CF Spero?
Prior to Spero, I would pop on the Peloton a few days a week and run on the treadmill at the gym.
What was your first experience with CrossFit?
My first experience with CrossFit was at Spero. Otherwise, I have a few friends who did CrossFit, and the community seemed really great.
When did you start CrossFit?
I started in October-ish 2024.
Why did you choose CF Spero?
I read Stacy Sim's book 'Roar' which really emphasized that women of a certain vintage would benefit from incorporating heavy lifting in their gym routine. Not knowing much about lifting, I reached out to the Working Mom's Facebook group, and several moms indicated that Spero had a great community - and although the WODs are challenging, they are scalable to your fitness level.I scheduled my first meeting with Dave and was really impressed with how all the coaches are super supportive. They really celebrate your individual victories!
What keeps you coming back?
The community, coaches, and those millennial playlists!
What do you do for a living?
I do quantitative research on health equity issues and nursing labor for the National Council of the State Boards of Nursing.
How do you like to spend your free time?
Mostly spending time with the kiddos and reading - I just finished 'Careless People: A Cautionary Tale'
What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CF?
Overall fitness: I can lift + carry my heaviest kiddo when she decides she doesn't want to get up in the morning; also 2-trip max for bringing groceries in the house.
What is the biggest change you have seen since starting CrossFit at Spero?
I think a shift of goals. When I started CF, my initial goal was to lose weight. However, I have shifted my goal to getting stronger and healthier. I'm less concerned with the scale and more interested in lifting heavier and reaching RX one day.
What are your goals for 2025?
I want to deadlift 1.5 x my weight and improve my lifting form.
What's your favorite and least favorite CF movement?
My favorite movement is 'toes to something'; it's a fun 'wee' movement! My least favorite movement is probably 'thrusters' - they're just hard.
What's your favorite meal?
My favorite meal is Tandoori Chicken with garlic naan.
Where is one place you would love to visit but haven't been able to yet?
I would love to visit the Overlook Hotel in Colorado for the annual Halloween Ball!
What are three hobbies or things you like to do outside of the gym?
Gaming (Baldur's Gate + Civilization), Girl Scout Troop leader, and Baking
What would you say to someone thinking about starting CrossFit at Spero?
Try it; all you have to do is show up (with a change of shoes!).
